Recovery Alberta was established July 1, 2024, and provides recovery-oriented mental health and addiction services and correctional health services in Alberta. It is one of four provincial health agencies announced by the Government of Alberta in November 2023 in its plans to refocus and strengthen Alberta's healthcare system.
One in five Albertans will experience mental illness or addiction in any given year. Recovery Alberta provides mental health and addiction services available for all Albertans in a variety of service settings (acute care, outpatient, virtual, detoxification, standalone psychiatric, community outreach and community bed-based), and is also responsible for the delivery of healthcare services in 10 correctional facilities across the province. We do this with the help of over 10,000 employees.
Recovery Alberta will work closely with AHS and the other three public health agencies to deliver services in shared spaces. The Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction provides $1.13B in funding to Recovery Alberta, as well as oversight for the organization.
Following the Refocusing health care in Alberta announcement by the Government of Alberta in November 2023, work began to establish Recovery Alberta. Recovery Alberta was legally established on July 1, 2024. Staff are planned to transition to the organization on September 1, 2024, when they will begin offering services to the public under the Recovery Alberta banner. Recovery Alberta is responsible for the delivery of mental health and addiction services that were previously delivered by Alberta Health Services (AHS).
Recovery Alberta continues to work diligently to ensure there are no disruptions to patient and client care due to this transition. Across the province, services have continued to be available in the same locations and provided by the same frontline staff.
Strong partnerships are foundational to delivering quality care for Albertans. Recovery Alberta is in partnership with the Government of Alberta, other public health agencies, contracted service providers, community groups, and more. Learn more about Recovery Alberta Partners.
