EDMONTON — Recovery Alberta will resume voluntary addiction treatment services at the Henwood Treatment Centre site in Edmonton once the required remediation, renovations and improvements are complete.

The site remains temporarily closed. However, Recovery Alberta has assessed the damage to date and reviewed current and future service needs. That work has informed the decision to resume voluntary bed-based addiction treatment services at the site. The safety and well-being of patients, staff and the community will continue to guide this work and decisions related to the site.

Following record rainfall over the spring and summer, the site experienced severe overland flooding that caused the facility to close on June 28, 2026. Patients were transitioned to alternative settings. Recovery Alberta also proactively reached out to the 104 individuals who were waiting to be assessed for admission into treatment at the site to discuss alternative treatment options and available supports.

There is still significant work ahead. Preliminary estimates indicate the required remediation, renovations and improvements could take an estimated one to two years to complete and cost approximately $6 million. Both the timeframe and cost estimate are subject to change as the full scope of the work is confirmed, and there is currently no confirmed date for services to resume at the site.

As a result of the temporary closure, Recovery Alberta is addressing staffing impacts resulting from the suspension of services. The applicable collective agreements provide the framework for managing this process. Recovery Alberta will continue to work closely with unions and affected employees and provide timely communication and support throughout the process.

Recovery Alberta recognizes the important role the site has and will continue to play in providing addiction treatment in Edmonton, including for patients with more complex needs requiring high-acuity care. Restoring services at the site is an important part of meeting current and future community needs.

In addition, provincial investments are adding more than 400 treatment, stabilization, housing and recovery spaces across the Edmonton area, and Poundmaker's Lodge Treatment Centre is 2 also returning to full operating capacity. Collectively, these investments strengthen Edmonton's continuum of care and help ensure continued access to appropriate treatment and recovery support.
